Support Your Local Black Girl: Kenya B, Ken’z Standz

Nineteen year old Kenya is a college student and owner of Ken’z Strandz. In her words, Ken’z Strandz is a place where hair styling and hair health coexist. Over the years, she noticed that many young men and women frequently switch styles and tended to neglect their hair health. To combat this she wanted to offer all natural products and services that maintain the integrity of the hair while styling as you please.

As a young girl, she suffered from an extremely dry scalp. After using tons of harmful synthetic chemicals, even dermatologists couldn’t remedy it without having to perform a procedure that required taking off a piece of her scalp. After this she decided to use ingredients that were found in her own kitchen on her scalp. Not only did she find a cure, she found a passion for creating all natural hair products at home. Over the years, she’s learned about many natural ingredients and their benefits for hair.

If you had one piece of advice to those just starting out a business, what would it be?

One piece of advice I would give to anyone starting a business would be to take your time and work at your own pace. It can be very discouraging when you see people doing better than you, doing the exact same thing as and getting more credit, or executing similar ideas you have. However, you don't want to rush your product or service. There is a time chosen just for you, where you will be seen, your hard work will be noticed, and will pay off. Paying attention to detail, perfecting your craft, and making sure you are confident with your product or service is worth way more in the long run than a flawed product. Patience is key.

Why do you feel your brand is important for other black women ?

I feel my brand is important for other black women because our hair is one of the many things that have been looked down upon, discriminated against, and copied. It's important for us to flaunt our hair, own our hair, love our hair, and all the styles that are possible while knowing how to care for your strands, as well.

Also an exclusive look into the brand is that along with new products in our Hibiscus and Ginseng Rejuvenating line, we're working on a completely new line focused on conditioning and moisturizing your strands. We offer services for those who would like custom wig constructions in any area, and you will see in person services being offered soon this 2020! Lastly, our newest product, Mineral Masque is now available on our site. If your curls are looking for a reboot, consider trying out this product! Keep an eye on our social media and sign up for our email list for exclusive and new updates involving our brand!
