Support Your Local Black Girl: Deanna M., Bare Muse

Deanna M, creator of Bare Muse, started designing and buying to make sure people felt included. As someone that was at one point in time uncomfortable with her own body, she wondered if other women out there were also feeling the same. Understanding that there was a lack of balance in the lingerie market, Deanna wanted to create a brand that reflected her personality: Shy yet sensual. Modest and bold.

“Sometimes looking around can discourage you and/or make you feel rushed when in actuality everything happens in divine timing.”— Deannea, founder of Bare Muse

Describe to us how you started your brand?

It honestly started out as a selfish thing lol. I couldn’t find intimates for myself that properly fit. I’m a 34ddd so shopping in stores for those sexy things never quite worked out. It was either too small or a double banded thick granny bra— and that was out. I decided to start making my own. Then I started seeing how happy I made certain people feel making them specialty/custom pieces and my “why” changed. It changed from not only wanting to focus on what I like and made me feel comfortable to also wanting to do the same for other women. Gradually, I turned Bare. Muse into a full lifestyle brand.

Why do you think your brand is important for Black Women?

I think Bare Muse is important to Black women because it’s crucial that we see and value each other first. No matter what. There are a lot of brands that have no intention for us other than copying and pasting our magic and slapping a tag on it and calling it something else. However, if we make/do things that target our own first our power and reach can last much longer. Targeting our own doesn’t mean excluding others, it just means thinking about us , our sisters & our mothers needs from a brand/business perspective first.

Any advice you want to give to other Black

entrepreneurs?

My one piece of advice would be never look around you, only look ahead. Sometimes looking around can discourage you and or make you feel rushed when in actuality everything happens in divine timing. I’ve started and stopped and started again, because set backs do happen and most people won’t share that part. Everyone wants to make it seem as if they’re always on top and to new entrepreneurs a mishap can be really damaging to the dream. Take the set back as an opportunity to gain more knowledge and share with the next person. Always trust your gut, you know your brands DNA , don’t stray from it for the sake of a quick dollar tho it maybe wildly enticing. In the long run you’ll be happier you held onto your brands integrity.
